Casting Call: New Drills & LEDs for Theatre Tech Department

We need new drills and LED lighting fixtures for backstage.

About My Students

Hi Donors! Our school's technical theatre program is completely run by the students who have volunteered their extracurricular time to our department. With only 1 director, the students learn technical design and application in class and then run the department after school (40-50 students a year). The Technical Department is led by four Technical Directors: Satvik, Andrew, Trey and John, and three Assistant TDs: Emma, Shea, and Jeremy. Each student specializes in 1 or 2 technical areas (ie- lighting, sound, costumes), however all lead together.

Our tech department includes students from all grades and a variety of backgrounds, from new freshman who stay involved for all four years to seniors who can only join for one season. The department works on a very low budget sustaining itself from show to show. Despite that they consistently create intricate and complex sets/ lighting/ costumes to enhance the stories the actors tell. One such example is a full size chandelier for Phantom of the Opera, that had the ability to crash/collapse every night of show without need of repair, all for under $300 dollars. I would say their art tells beautiful stories anyone can get lost in.

Our theatre department is split into two different sections: actor and tech. The tech department focuses on designing and building the set, lights and other background pieces for each show, and by this point they are mostly working with outdated tools (specifically drills & lighting). This department allows for students to apply engineering/ design curriculum in a real world application of construction & entertainment. Additionally, our department focuses on team leadership, artistic expression and working in large groups to create a seamless product. All productions are students designed and built, from start to finish!

In Their Own Words

My name is Andrew, one of the student technical directors for the Alley Cat Players Theatre Department. With this project we will be able to replenish our supply of old drills so that we can more efficiently finish projects that we are working on. Our tech department is growing very quickly, and we are running out of tools for them to simultaneously use, so new drills would greatly aid our construction process. The addition of new LED lighting fixtures will add elements of design we have yet to explore with our older equipment.

As the creators of this project, myself and the rest of the Technical Director team will continue to nurture our leadership skills through the facet of reaching out to the rest of the world. Since we are already leaders within our department everyday, we are the ones to create and facilitate our projects and designs, but this campaign will help us tune to a separate aspect of being a leader: expanding our ideas beyond these four walls and marketing ourselves to the outside world.

This project is integral to aiding our growing tech department. With the advances and lighting and tool technology we feel like we can explore new design and engineering concepts that our older equipment limits. Having this extra efficiency and power will help our department perform better than we ever have before. We hope integrating new equipment will bring a new generation of company members that are excited about cutting-edge technology like programmable LEDs.
