Art is essential to the well-being of many of the students I teach.
My classroom is a haven for them; they enjoy the relaxed air and the changing materials.
Together, we create a lot of amazing artwork that expresses feelings, builds skills, and fosters camaraderie. The students in my school are eager to learn new skills and ideas. They are very creative and highly engaged learners. They thrive on new information, materials, and concepts. They push the boundaries of their art education as far as they can. They accept new challenges with aplomb!
My school has a wide variety of students. Many languages are spoken in our district and our school reflects that diversity. Some students are from divorced homes. Some have special needs. We are a McKinney-Vento Receiving School as well, which means a percentage of our students are homeless.
One thing that is common to every child here, however, is an eagerness to be the best artists and students that they can be. I am continuously inspired by their insights and interpretations, and the work that my students are doing is of a very high caliber.
My Project
Not all linoleum is created equal. Some is really tough and difficult to cut. Some is slippery and more likely to cause injury to inexperienced students. When students have the correct material, however, the possibilities are limitless. Frustration takes a backseat to creativity.
This linoleum is the perfect blend of softness and resilience and provides my beginning and advanced printmakers alike with a flawless surface on which to carve their most creative ideas!
Printmaking is a skill that students need lots of practice with, but it also results in incredible surfaces to print that every student can be happy with and proud of. With this particular linoleum, all of my students can participate, regardless of their fine motor abilities. It's just that workable!
