My Project

Ya'átʼééh! In our Navajo Language class we are learning about traditional crafts. One of the traditional crafts that we have as Navajo (Diné) people is weaving. For generations our ancestors have mastered and passed on the craft. Today, there are very few people who have learned the traditional techniques of weaving. As a weaver myself, it is my role as a traditional knowledge keeper to pass on this sacred art as my ancestors have done.

I emphasize cultural revitalization and restoration in my classes, and students take great pride in having the opportunity to carry on our traditional Navajo language and culture.

In our second quarter of school I taught the students about the origins of traditional weaving. My students have taken great interest in traditional crafts, so much in fact they requested to have an after school club dedicated to weaving. Proudly, I have accepted to lead and teach this class/club. I have made preparations already to begin this club for the students. Weaving looms and traditional weaving tools have been commissioned by a local Navajo artist. With your help as a donor, we will be able to provide the students with yarn and warping material to begin their weaving journey. I am sure that with this club and your help as a donor, we will be able to carry on our traditional art of weaving for many more generations to come. áhehééʼ (Thank you).
