My Students

I have a classroom full of brilliant and resilient little learners who most days accidentally call me mommy. Yes, I teach Kindergarten!

My students are from Jersey City, which is amazingly diverse and largely over populated.

My kiddos have such a desire to learn about the world around them and how to be good friends and neighbors but struggle to overcome the daily things they see and examples that are set around them. I stare into the faces of my little learners, longing to flip a switch and change some of their circumstances. You see, many of my students are being raised by grandparents or single parent homes. Many of them are just 1 of multiple children within their households making it difficult to get 1-on-1 time, help with their homework or even just hearing a bed time story. Almost all of them receive free/reduced lunch based on household income. That being said, it is my duty to make sure they have access to as many educational resources as possible!

It is their blatant hunger for learning that brings me here, hoping to feed them the education they yearn for and above all, the education they deserve!

My Project

We have our classroom set up in a way to promote strategic areas designated for certain subjects such as, ELA and Math as well as Calendar time and Reading centers. Currently we don't have carpets in these areas and the children will gather on the bare floor. I'm hoping to make them more comfortable during whole group instruction as well as provide a space for them to feel comfortable during centers and read-to-self times.

Also, we are hopefully getting white boards soon to replace chalk boards but are not able to use the green boards until this happens.

An easel will be a mobile solution to my lack of writing/modeling space.
