Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are a high poverty school with a very diverse population of students of all backgrounds but we do not allow that to affect the quality of the program or the experiences our students are exposed to. We want the best for them and they deserve it.

Please help the Notables to sing their hearts out at the legendary Carnegie Hall!

In May 2016, the SLHS Notables (the advanced choir at the school), competed at the World Strides Heritage festival. The Notables were the underdogs of the entire competition under the choral category. Show choirs and private school choirs were flashy and impressive to the judges. The judges, however, were impressed with the Notables' ability to blend together and sing with dynamics and emotion. The Notables subsequently won the gold award, as well as an invitation to perform at the legendary Carnegie Hall in March of 2018. Coming from a public school, the Notables have very little to no funding. In order for them to go on this once-in-a-lifetime journey, they must fundraise a lot of money.

My Project

Students will get to travel across the country to New York. Some of our students have never traveled out of state before!

In New York we will spend 5 days working on creating music and studying singing skills with an internationally known choral director and students from all over the country.

After practicing for several days we will have the opportunity to perform in Carnegie Hall!

We will also get to visit famous landmarks like the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Empire State Building, and The Statue of Liberty. We will also get the experience of seeing a Broadway Show!

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
