Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a French teacher at a North Side inner city Chicago Public School where 85% of our student body composed primarily of Hispanic, Black, Eastern European, and Asian are on public assistance. My students are bright,enthusiastic,and eager to go beyond the classroom walls and textbooks to explore French. We have had volunteer guest speakers from the business, art, music, and culinary communities share their experiences with my students. My students have also visited free exhibits of Impressionist artists at the Art Institute. These experiences have enriched their lives. In March 2006 the opera "Carmen" comes to the Lyric Opera House. I would like to take my advanced students to the March 16th matinee and show that opera music just might challenge their world of hip hop and salsa. My unit includes intro to what opera is, the reading, listening, and viewing of selected scenes from the opera, and a variety of follow up activities. The Lyric Opera House education committee also provides a curriculum that I can adapt for my classes as part of my instruction. If I can expose my students to a live opera performance, I know they will benefit. The French language set to music sung with so much emotion, beautiful costumes, history come to life, stage sets, and just the idea of being in an opera house will make this an aesthetic education and an unforgettable personal experience that will further enrich their lives.
