My Students

My school is a Title One school which means that the majority of students in my class come from a lower socioeconomic status. I happen to live in the same school area where I teach so I am very familiar with the demographics of the area. Interestingly enough, I attended the very same Elementary as a child where I now work, so I have a vested interest in the students and community. My students enjoy seeing me at the park, library, church, and around town. My most favorite is when they trick-or-treat at my house or play with my own children.

Many of my students come from difficult backgrounds, without a lot of support from home.

I am fully committed to helping these children succeed in any way I possibly can. In fact, I recently adopted three children from the foster program who attended the Elementary where I teach.

School is truly a sanctuary for most of my students. I want to make sure I have all the materials necessary to help my students become successful despite their backgrounds.

My Project

My classroom has tables and stools instead of desks and chairs. This poses a problem when trying to store materials and supplies. Having whiteboards already at our tables will increase student learning and prevent excessive frustration.

Having floor seating options will provide students necessary breaks from the "back-breaking" work of sitting at stools all day.

Students can benefit from sitting on the floor to give themselves a rest.

Students in school and at home can benefit from having earbuds instead of bulky headphones. Students can each have a set of earbuds to use at home and one at school without having to bring them back and forth. Also, the cost of the earbuds is much less than headphones so they are easier to replace when they get lost and broken.
