My students need a play kitchen, STEM centers, and basic cleaning and wellness supplies to help their homeless classmate, whose parents were deported, feel a sense of normalcy during this heartbreaking time.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My kindergartners are from a vibrant region in the state of Florida that takes pride in its rich, Latino cultural heritage. Because of this, our population is made up of many English Language Learners. It is up to us to make sure they get the best education they deserve. My students are young, ambitious and curious. They work together as a team to achieve common goals. They are supportive of their classmates and celebrate the successes of their peers. They are a hardworking group of students who display excitement and enthusiasm toward learning.
Our philosophy is: we build our future one step at a time!
Our school is a Title I/Renaissance school. The majority of our students are from low-income families, which is reflected by our 91% free or reduced-price lunch status. Although my kids face socioeconomic challenges, they come to school everyday willing to learn. I get the most satisfaction as a teacher when I see their faces light up when they finally "get it" or when I read a book that completely captivates their attention and takes them on a journey. Because materials are needed to achieve these goals, I have decided to start this project.
My Project
On the first day of school I found out that I had a student whose parents were deported and he was left behind with his high school aged brother. Quickly I turned to the DonorsChoose community for help and in a few hours, caring donors around the country helped us get resources to help him learn English, books that talked about immigrants and the strengths they bring to this country, and playground equipment to help him participate in outdoor activities because we didn’t know if this was the only time he was able to play outside due to fear of being deported. I find myself once more asking for your help in providing him and his classmates with a play kitchen, STEM centers, and basic cleaning and wellness supplies to provide a sense of normalcy for him and to keep him and his classmates healthy so they can come to school every day ready to learn!
Caring truly has no Borders!
His story hit close to home because I am a son of an immigrant mother who came to the States to give us a better life. She's the reason I am who I am today and can't imagine what I would have felt like if she would have been ripped away from me. He and his brother are homeless, without a mom or dad, they have no money and I can't even begin to imagine how they must feel inside. If I can provide anything for him, it would be a sense of normalcy to his heartbreaking situation. For this reason, I am asking for a play kitchen and STEM centers to spend careful time planning diverse learning centers, with open-ended activities and hands-on materials. Children his age learn, grow, and internalize through interactive experiences with each other. Thank you!
