Each year, it's a wonder and a joy to watch my students learn and grow, to overcome challenges, to put in maximum effort to succeed. A large percentage of my students come from homes that are struggling economically, and some are struggling with other heartbreaking situations. Yet, they come every day with smiles on their faces and the determination to achieve, excel, and succeed. We are a family in my classroom, and the students hold and lift each other up with encouragement and acceptance that helps each and every one of them shine. They are all so wonderfully different, and they know and understand that this is something to be valued.
How can I expect my students to focus on learning when they are hungry, their clothing are full of holes and stains, and they have no one to teach them about taking care of their own hygiene?
We are a Title I school with a large English Learner and socioeconomically disadvantaged student population. 65% of our 700 students participate in the free and reduced-priced lunch program. Please help me support these children while we strive to overcome all obstacles in their way to achieving a quality education.
My Project
Have you ever tried focusing on difficult concepts and texts when your stomach is empty and hurting? My students are hungry all the time. Some of them are not receiving wholesome breakfasts and start the day with poor nutrition. Families cannot afford to send students to school with snacks and lunch is hours away. Some students approach me at the end of the school day asking if I have something they can eat before they get home because they won't have anything to eat until much later.
Please help me provide my students with nutritious snacks that will allow them to concentrate on their jobs, to learn and grow.
I would like to be able to provide these children with something to eat anytime they are hungry. In addition, students will be expected to help keep our classroom clean to prevent illness and the transmission of germs. So far this year, we have successfully avoided Covid in our classroom, and I would like to keep it that way. I am doing everything I can to keep my students healthy!
