My students need a variety of cutting, taping, gluing and making materials so that they can participate in the Cardboard Challenge, a project-based learning event that kids participate in from around the world.
Our school is a public charter school that opened its doors in the fall of 2014. Our curriculum focus on project-based learning uses essential questions and “big ideas” which allows our students to bring themselves to their learning and make real world connections.
While our students come from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds they share a common value for learning.
They choose our school so they can succeed with a variety of skills we provide in our ever increasing competitive world.
My Project
Creativity is recognized as one of the most critical skills for the next generation. Its value reaches well beyond the arts to affect every discipline and numerous industries. Inspired by the short film, ‘Caine’s Arcade’, the Global Cardboard Challenge is an annual event presented by the Imagination Foundation to celebrate child creativity and the role communities can play in fostering it. In September, kids of all ages from around the world are invited to build anything they can dream up using cardboard, recycled materials and imagination. Then on a day in October, they present their cardboard creations to their community for a day of play and interaction.
Our school will participate as part of our focus on project-based learning in this extraordinary hands on learning and problem solving worldwide creative experience.
It allows our students to work both individually and together in groups to build their skills in design thinking, collaboration and the 21 century critical thinking skills.
The supplies we need for the challenge include all the maker tools for creating the structures students will build out of cardboard and include multiple types of tape, glues, and cutting tools. We will also use paint to add realistic designs and effects.
