Capturing Your Essence

My students need synthetic blood and antiserum for lab experiments to illustrate genetic inheritance of blood types.

My Students

Have you ever wondered why you look the way you do? Have you ever wanted straight hair instead of curly, blond hair instead of brown, blue eyes instead of brown? My students have these questions and the study of genetics has many of the answers.

My students are great people with lots of questions.

They come from all types of cultures and socioeconomic levels to come to our city school. Some travel by bus to get to school, sometimes for up to an hour, others live in the neighborhood. My students are all very different and from that difference come questions about who they are. Understanding genetics will help them understand there differences and celebrate those differences. With the current budget in the state, money for lab experiments is hard to find. They deserve the chance to see how genetics works using hand-on activities.

My Project

Capturing your Essence. Who are you? This is a question answered by DNA and genetics. So much of our being is determined by our genes. Through receiving synthetic blood and antiserum, students will explore how genes determine phenotype (what you look like), by doing a lab called, "Who's your Daddy." This lab sets up a hypothetical situation in a hospital, babies switched at birth. Students need to check the blood types of the babies, using synthetic blood and anti-serum, and determine if the hospital accidentally gave the babies to the wrong parents. This will help students see that blood type is passed from parent to child. They will also learn how the immune system works and why certain blood-types can donate to anyone and other cannot. This lab is only one in a series of genetic and DNA activities that students will perform to help understand their essence.

Students should be able to pick up a newspaper article on DNA and genetics and understand what they are reading.

Even more importantly students should be able to understand who they are and why we are all different in many ways, but similar in others. Its almost all in our GENES!! Help me help students understand their genes. It will help them understand our world and each other.
