I have the privilege to work in a school with the best kids! I work with students of diverse backgrounds who bring their own unique histories to school with them every day.
One of the unique abilities of my students is that they exceed expectations by excelling in state exams despite their statistics.
More than half of our students come from low-income households. Despite this, they are some of the hardest working kids I know. As a school, we get significantly less money per student compared to lower preforming high schools. This hurts our students because they come from the same areas of the county as other students. Yet they do not get the same technology advantages other schools get. I would love to give this opportunity to them.
My Project
Our plan is to purchase a digital camera for a project we are doing with both a local botanical garden and a national garden club. The class project will consist of photo and video documentation of the plants and animals on Tow-Head Island, an urban island in Louisville, Kentucky. We will use the photos and videos for the botanical garden website and their social media accounts.
The plan is to use the photos to create walking identification guides for the public of the flora and fauna of a local urban island.
We want to continue building a relationship with the community and the new botanical garden. Students will also act as guides and take people out to the site and show them the plants and animals that live there. Our long-term goal is to eventually apply for the island to be recognized as a protected area by the state.
