Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Teaching gifted middle school students provides lots of challenges for me as teacher. With STEM learning as our primary focus for instruction in this Title I classroom, my students are always excited about digital and technological learning!

With the rapid pace of technology innovation today comes the need for my students to develop even more innovative problem-solving strategies.

Whether using Google docs and slides, developing programming skills for robots, or searching for technology solutions, my students are focused on building the foundations for digital literacy in the 21st Century.

My Project

My middle school students are most highly motivated to connect with STEM learning when they're working on authentic problems and projects. While building and programming robots can be engaging, developing applications for this rapidly expanding technology is where the real learning takes place. My students will be creating Rube Goldberg contraptions; a complex series of simple machines that come together to accomplish a mundane task such as erasing the whiteboard or watering a plant.

My students would like to build a robot equiped with a GoPro camera, to record and document the interactions taking place within their Rube Goldberg contraptions.

What appears to be a simple task, recording a contraption in action, is really much more complex. Student teams will collaborate to plan, build, and test their Rube Goldberg contraptions while other students work to develop a robot designed to carry, support, and safeguard the GoPro as it records the action. Students will then work together to review the recordings, edit, and then publish their final footage to share with peers, family, and the community. Ultimately, my goal is for students to learn new problem-solving skills and strategies for improving their work, motivating them to become more independent and successful learners.
