Our middle school is located in one of the oldest areas of our city. The west side of Columbus has a rich history that predates Columbus becoming the capital. Many of our students are unaware of the important nature of the history of their community. They have much to be proud of and yet, our area does not often receive the recognition that it should. I want my students to begin to see the value of their community and recognize their important role in it.
Much like the area, teens and preteens can often be underestimated.
No one should ever underestimate my students. They are powerful. They have a voice. They are the change we need in this world.
In addition to performing in our music program, my students are also active in other areas of school and our community. Our group, "We Are the Change" works to support our school and community through area cleanups, weekend food distribution, and amplifying student voice.
My Project
It is important that our students learn to tell their stories. They need to not only have a voice but find a way to amplify it. This GoPro camera will help my students tell the stories that matter to them, stories that impact their community and their lives. My students need to see that what happens on a local level is exceedingly important and that they can be important contributors. This camera will help my students make recordings of events that take place in our school and community.
I don't just want my students to find their voice, I want them to recognize its power.
