Our students are studying their neighborhood and what it means to be a community. Our school is Title I, and primarily serves children from the Amsterdam Houses, a public housing community within Manhattan's Upper West Side. They will be taking neighborhood walks and looking at major sights in the neighborhood (Lincoln Center, Columbus Circle, the fire department, the library and the housing project where our students live). To best understand these sights and their functions, we want the students to photograph them in order to compare them to pictures of different eras. They will also use these photographs to build and create a map of the community. To complete this study, we need a digital camera to quickly capture and reproduce the images they find. One camera and the pictures it captures will easily grab the attention and the imagination of 20 first-graders, as well as foster a love of multi-media technologies.
