There are many ways to "capture" a student's attention and improve literacy. One way that is successful is through photo-journaling.
My students are refugees from various countries around the world who attend an inner-city public school with limited resources.
Most of my students have been denied the opportunity to get continuous schooling in their early years which has affected their literacy skills and some have had no opportunity at all.
My Project
Many of my students have very low or no literacy skills at all. In addition, some of them are not yet able to communicate their ideas verbally, but are eager to express themselves. It is challenging to find creative ways to motivate and improve their literacy when they are older, but recently I discovered a way to have them communicate their thoughts through photos. There is no better way to improve literacy skills than through writing and reading your own words. Purchasing 5 digital cameras (and their accessories) for use in our school and the community will provide opportunities for my students to take photos and video and put words to their stories they want to tell.
My students are eager to learn.
Using cameras will provide another avenue to help them improve their skills and motivate them to learn in a different way. Photography, I have discovered is an amazing tool to open up the world of my students and it enables them to communicate in a new way.
