My students are from the South Side of Chicago and are part of a program that teaches students with disabilities life skills. This program gives children from all cultures, areas, and various incomes an opportunity to learn and thrive within the district. My energetic, diverse learners enter the classroom ready to learn, discover, and explore. They love learning skills that will help them reach success in life and promote independence. My students are very special because they are always willing to learn despite any challenges they may need to overcome. They never give up.
In order to live a successful and productive life, my students with disabilities need to know who can help them. By recognizing vital community helpers like firemen and police, they will know who to go to when in need of help. Many of my students will not approach people in the community and by using these figures they will become more comfortable in doing so.
By donating to our project, you will not only help to improve and increase student attention and focus to the real world, you will ultimately help to increase their ability to communicate in case they are in need of help.
My students struggle with identifying the many different community figures and using their communication skills to communicate with them. A Community Helper theme teaches students about all the people who live and work in their neighborhood. There are so many fun community helpers themed activities we can do with the Lego figures. One such activity is to build a community map or neighborhood using the figures and have students identify what each community member does and how they can help them.
