My students need a closer-up view to what I'm doing up front. A document camera will project the images on a big screen and make it easier for them to comprehend and learn!
My fifth grade students live in a small, tight-knit, community. They come from families that value education and encourage hard work. We are a small, public, K-5 elementary school. Because of our small size there is a strong sense of community, family and support, but sometimes a lack of budget for resources we need.
In a classroom with a large number of students, it can sometimes be hard for all students to sit close enough to see and hear everything they need to succeed.
Sometimes it can be hard to see the board and/or front of the room, when I want to teach things in a more physical way. Either by using visual models, or printing examples up in the front. My students are so eager to learn, that I see them straining their necks and eyes as they look toward me, doing their best to follow and learn.
My Project
With a document camera, I can give my students a close-up view of the visual models I use as I teach. Math tools, picture books, interactive writing, art projects, science specimens and social studies artifacts -- all can be brought into focus for every student in the room with a document camera. The camera is compatible with the multimedia projector I already have, and the images will be projected on a big screen.
This camera will help me to bring exciting visual learning to my enthusiastic, inquisitive class of 5th graders.
Visual learning is engaging for all students. Without the camera, my use of visuals is limited. I can pass things around, or show in small groups, but in a big class that takes a long time and can break the rhythm of the lesson. A document camera will transform my teaching and my students' learning. All students can see what is going on at the same time, and see it clearly! I can show each step as I write a story or solve a math problem. Or show a bar graph of different properties of an insect, or a country!
Interactive lessons will be possible all day, every day, inspiring my students to extend their thinking. I am excited to begin teaching in this new way with a document camera. Thanks you very much for your help!
