My Students

I am a first grade teacher to a class of 18 very energetic and emotional first graders. They are so happy to come to school and are always willing to work hard.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic some of my students are experiencing being in a physical classroom for the first time this year.

Additionally, they have also had to make an adjustment to being in school for a full day.

My Project

Students social-emotional needs must be taken care of before learning occurs. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic I have seen a rise in the number of students with anxiety, depression and other big emotions that they do not have strategies to cope with. Additionally, some of my students have struggled with being in a classroom all day long and being able to focus.

These students need tools to help them understand their emotions and find positive ways to focus their attention.

The Little Spot of Feeling and Little Spot of Life Skills books will help my students learn about and understand their emotions. They will also provide my students with different techniques to help them regulate their emotions. The plush toys that go along with these books will provide my students with a visual for each emotion to help them identify what they are feeling. The other books (The Boy with Big Feelings, Ruby Finds a Worry, and B is for breathe) will help my students to learn about other kids who also have big emotions that they are unsure what to do with. This will help them know that they are not alone in feeling big feelings. The wobble chairs, Appash fidget cubes, and Crazy Aarons thinking putty will help my students to channel their energy in a positive way so that they can focus on their most important task, learning. This will help many students who have found it difficult to be in a classroom all day long during the COVID-19 pandemic. All of these things together will help my wonderful students this year and future students to be ready to learn and succeed each day as they come to school.
