Help me give my students have the opportunity to partake in an canvas painting class to make up for the art classes that they currently do not have access to.
Students in our district are from a small, rural community in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Our community has a lower socioeconomic population. State data indicates that 77% of the students are participating in free and reduced-price lunch programs.
Our students are dedicated and enthusiastic learners.
They thrive when they are given the opportunity and the resources to do so. Encouraging these opportunities is essential to making school about so much more than just learning the content.
Teachers have the opportunity this year to offer a half hour special class three days a week. Teachers were able to submit ideas about things they were passionate about and could teach our students. Our students at the middle school level are lacking arts programs through our school.
My Project
At our school, we have an opportunity to teach half hour classes three days a week where we will be able to showcase skills that we have outside of the scope of our traditional subjects.
I love painting and hope to be able to spread the joy of art to my students.
Art gives students a different perspective to express themselves. I want to be able to give them this opportunity, but it is not something that I can fund out of my own pocket. I am hoping for help to support my students and their creative nature. They are deserving of different forms of expression.
I would like to teach students the basics of painting through a canvas painting class where I walk students through a painting step by step. This would give students a good opportunity to work on fine motor skills and problem solving, provide stress relief, and helps build self esteem. The benefits of this project have a wide range and I hope to help students relax and enjoy their time.
We would need a canvas for each student, paints, multiple different brushes for different styles of brush strokes, containers for washing our brushes out, and paper plates for pallets for the paint. These are not things that I currently have in the amounts that I would need to support my students on this magnitude.
