My Students

This year my district has set up a virtual academy for students and families who want to stay in virtual learning, and I am teaching fifth grade virtually again! I loved it last year and my students really thrived, despite the challenges we faced. I teach at a low-income urban school district and many of my students are performing below grade level.

My students are doing amazingly well with virtual learning; they're trying very hard to learn to navigate the digital world!

They love being competitive at the end of each lesson - they're also great at utilizing teamwork and positive talk when participating in class!

Regardless of the challenges, my class is full of smiles and laughs! Now we just need some resources to keep them having fun while they learn!

My Project

We use a program called Nearpod and Kami often during math class (and all subjects, really). Nearpod, especially, is great to monitor student work in real-time in one place, but I can also do work on my screen.

I currently use my mouse to draw math work out for my students on Nearpod slides or the whiteboard option, but it can get sloppy unless I draw it painstakingly slow.

I am hoping with an iPad Pro tablet I can use a stylist instead to clearly write out my work. It is not a major inconvenience, but it is enough of one that on a daily basis I am struggling to make my writing clear (using a mouse) and slow down to ensure it is clearly written as I am also clearly speaking/explaining.

Math is a bit of a bear in 5th grade. Students learned long division last year (virtually) and that alone is something my entire class is still struggling with - never mind that we have now started dividing using two-digit divisors. A lot of the math we are doing really requires a lot of writing that the drawing tool is best used for instead of the typing tool (especially since formatting on there is so limited with the typing tool).

I know this is an expensive request, but it would really and truly help me teach my class and for my students to take notes and learn from.
