My Students

I teach high school Criminal Justice at a school with a diverse student population and a strong focus on science and technology. Our students are curious, creative, and love learning through projects and activities. My classes serve the full spectrum of the student population.

I want my students to realize that every one of them, no matter who they are, looks like a crime scene investigator.

They have the ability to problem-solve, looking at the evidence and seeing what it says just like a police detective. To realize they can be the expert; conduct analytical tests, use their new found knowledge as an expert witness in court and share their knowledge confidently with the jury. I want to hook that student that thinks science is boring or unimportant, and enhance the love of science for those that already have it. Seeing is believing and they will believe they are real forensic anthropologists when they are done examining the bones of the deceased and determine the age, gender, height and race of the deceased simply by the skeletal remains and try to solve unsolved cases!

My students get excited when they get to see and do things that are real-life.

My Project

This grant would provide the resources to try to unsolved cases and purchase a lab kit containing fake bones (cast in plastic from actual bones) and resources for the students to investigate the bones and help determine the identity of the person.

The goal of this lab is for the students to take on the role of a forensic scientist and make this experience as hands-on as possible.

Students will measure the bones using Vernier calipers, protractors and metric rulers. In addition, they will observe various characteristics of the bones. Students will use the measurements and observations to determine basic characteristics of the person, including height, gender, age and race to help construct information about the deceased person’s identity.

This lab will allow students to act as a forensic anthropologist and help solve a mystery. It puts the student in a real-world situation in their forensics classroom.
