My Project

In my music technology classroom, students often spend time making music, podcasts, or audio dramas independently. This process allows students to learn music production techniques in ways that are relevant to their own interests. Headphones play a crucial role in this process, as students each have their own individual tastes, preferences, and lived experiences that they can express through their projects.

Providing headphones in my classroom not only enables students to express themselves through their work; it also eliminates a financial barrier to access the music lab.

Given that my school serves a wide variety of students from across Pittsburgh, it is unrealistic for me to expect that all students have the means to provide their own headphones. Because of this, providing every student work station with fully functional headphones helps to ensure equitable access to the arts within my school.

While I have only taught at this school for a few months, I have already been amazed by the creativity that my students exhibit. So far, I have seen students take the concepts that we address in class and experiment with musical and non-musical audio mediums - while some students have chosen to explore unfamiliar genres of music, others have taken to creating podcasts, radio-style newscasts, and audiobooks. Not only do these projects bring joy to my students, they also allow them to explore their own identity. By funding this project, you are ensuring that my classroom remains a space where that is possible for all students.
