I have 23 students, 19 of whom are reading below grade level. Of those 19, 6 are English as a Second Language students. I'd love to be able to read out loud to them several times a day but time won't allow it. This is where a listening center is vital.
My school is a Title 1 urban school in North Carolina.
I have 23 students who are learning to love to read. I have 10 boys and 13 girls and there's never a dull moment. 6 of my students speak Spanish as a first language. They are a very lively and inquisitive class and ask some of the best questions. We are considered to be a high poverty school. These children want to learn to be better readers and I want to help them achieve that goal.
My Project
My students participate in literacy centers each day. They work on reading to themselves or a partner, writing, and word skills. I use a version of The Sisters' Daily 5 and CAFE. One of the components of Daily 5 is "Listening". I don't have children complete that center because I don't have the equipment necessary. I'm asking for a CD player with 8 sets of headphones so I can provide my students with the opportunity to hear fluent reading daily.
Part of becoming a good reader is listening to others read with feeling and accuracy.
Since I have 19 students below grade level and 6 students who don't speak English as a first language, modeling fluent and accurate reading is vital to their development as readers. These students want to read and they are learning to love to read. I want to make sure they have the opportunity to hear their favorite stories again and again.
