Our students want to succeed. We see it in their excitement to share knowledge and inquisitiveness around new material. Many of them are recent arrivals to the United States; some come with no English. Some say they can't do math or science but all get excited when we work on computers.
We are a large, urban middle school with a diverse cross section of our city's general education students.
They bring spark and joy even when faced with difficult circumstances. We are also home to a growing newcomer population. These students who have arrived as recently as yesterday bring many assets to our school culture and overcome language and content gaps to graduate to grade level work. Our community also includes a large SPED population. These students have a variety of needs ranging from social-emotional to visual processing. They enthusiastically use tech on a daily basis.
Our students all demand their education, from kids who come from other countries to students whose families have lived in Oakland for multiple generations. They are excited to learn and prepare themselves for high school and the challenges of a technology driven world. They ask us for more technology and we strive to succeed!
My Project
The headsets will be put to use immediately in our newcomer English Language Development classes. Students are learning to speak, read, and write in English and Google's Read & Write extension is supporting their development. With headsets that include a microphone, students can read text and have it transcribed into documents on their chromebook! This connection between speaking and reading is a vital step in their language development. Additionally, the HDMI chords will support student presentations and the combination locks will keep our technology safe!
Our Newcomers deserve the best resources to support their growth and success in high school and beyond!
This project is another step in the right direction. We have caring, motivated teachers who support students everyday. Now we want to make sure that every student has the materials they need to be successful everyday.
