Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Classroom rugs are so much more than large, soft pieces of fabric. These pieces of fabric have the capacity to allow someone to feel at home, especially my kiddos who are entering ELLs and new to the country—being the dual language teacher, I have plenty of those loving and nervous individuals!

A rug gives everyone a place to sit together, establishing a place of community; here, the learning process is open to all as the playing field is even and equal.

With a classroom rug, students of all academic proficiencies have a safe space to ask for help from one another, bounce ideas off one another, and to simply try new things. The grouping is heterogeneous and everyone has the power and invitation to get involved!

My students are always itching to work away from their desks, so this classroom rug will be immediately adored. It will be in constant use throughout mini-lessons of all subjects, independent work, group work, SEL instruction, read-alouds, fast-finishers, small groups, free time, etc. While this rug will absolutely have academic benefits as they are able to achieve work completion, it will also have social-emotional benefits as students practice and strengthen the skills of autonomy, self-assessment, teamwork, leadership, problem-solving, critical thinking, and so much more!

All in all, a classroom rug is so much more than a large, soft piece of fabric. It is an essential part of any home, and a classroom is no different!
