My students range from first to fifth grade. I currently have fifteen boys who have emotional disabilities or other behavior needs that need to be addressed regularly throughout the day. The class size is smaller and the staff size is larger due to the problematic behaviors that are shown in the classroom each day. However, I also try to make sure that as much learning that can take place, does take place each day we are at school.
Many of these students come from low-income families and have limited learning resources available to them outside of the classroom.
I hope to make sure that learning inside and outside of our classroom is meaningful, engaging and as real to these boys as possible.
My Project
In our classroom there are many different grades and learning levels. With students in grades 1-5 in a single classroom, learning can become a challenge when they all need support. Differentiating instruction can become difficult and many times attention and focus are a tough skill for my students.
With the support of technology, learning can truly occur independently and on each student’s level.
Our district is fortunate to have access to iPads, online learning programs for math and reading and a STEM program to teach technology skills that students will use in the future.
However, many of my students do not have access to headphones and our classroom lacks an effective charging station for the technology. With these donations we will gain these essential tools to help with each child's learning. Headphones are essential tools when students are working on multiple devices and on different programs geared to their learning. Currently, students must share headphones and many get distracted and off task due to the noises from others learning and stations taking place in the room. iPads are frequently not charged over night and students must take valuable learning time doing this daily or use a less efficient method to get their instruction. With these headphones and charging station these issues will be fixed and more learning will take place. My goal is to support these children in any way to make sure they get the access to learning and I hope you will each help me accomplish this.
