Can my Kindergarten students count on your help? I have 25 energetic students who are learning to count and recognize numbers. Ten of these students are LAP (learning English) and need lots of support to be successful.
My students are from Indiana and attend an urban public school that is nestled within a low income neighborhood.
We have a very diverse classroom filled with students who speak various languages, have a variety of special needs and come from different types of families. Although my students are all very unique, they all have one thing in common--they are learning how to count!
Every afternoon, my students get to participate in Discovery Centers. I would say, this is their favorite part of the day because students have an opportunity to explore various learning materials. Our classroom materials are in specific areas of the room. We have a writing area, a reading library, a computer area and a Math area. My students need some independent counting activities that they can successfully do on their own, but are somewhat structured to encourage them to actually apply their counting skills while exploring. The Frog on a Log game is perfect because my students will instinctively count as they place each adorable frog on the log. The counting keys and counting mats will be especially helpful for my English-language learners, who can count the objects to figure out the name of the number. By introducing these amazing counting materials into our Math area, my students' counting skills will quickly improve.
Although I have little control over the outside world, my students know that they can always count on me to provide them with an exciting and safe learning environment.
I am always striving to meet the needs of each new class of students. It is apparent to me already, that my current class needs additional support in counting. The materials will make a world of difference in my students' independent learning time. This project can become a reality! Can my students "count" on you for help?
