Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Wow! Things have changed quite a bit since I was in school, for the better! When I was in school we read and studied. All of the learning was our own. Today students work cooperatively to benefit from the experience of others.
My students are an incredible group of seventh and eighth graders who have a strong desire to learn.
Despite the fact that they have may personal challenges, they work hard at school. They look to me to guide them and help them. I am so excited to spend each day with them, helping them gain science knowledge. I love having them work in cooperative groups, as I can then move about the classroom giving individual groups the help they need. They work so well together!
My Project
The poster boards, crayons and glue are simple materials, but hard to obtain through my district. These supplies will be used in many cooperative activities. My favorite is the traveling jigsaw. Each group studies a topic and creates a poster. They cooperatively develop a plan to teach the topic (research shows that students retain 90% of what they teach). Then, all of the groups split up. Each group sends a representative to the new teams. The new teams have one member who is an "expert" at each topic. The students rotate to all of the posters, each student taking a turn teaching the topic he/she worked on. The posters are displayed so students can explain them to their parents during conferences. This makes for an awesome learning experience for all. These materials will allow my to participate in this activity, as well as many others. The students benefit greatly from this style of learning, and with the necessary supplies, the students can excel.

The students benefit greatly from this style of learning, and the information they retain can help them to perform at a high level in my class, and on important standardized tests. Support of this project will really make a difference for four wonderful classes of learners.
