My Students

Albert Einstein once stated, "It's not that I am so smart, it's just that I stay with problems longer". One could say that Albert Einstein was an exceptional example of an individual who persevered. The 7th graders at my school are learning to, "Make sense of [mathematical] problems and persevere in solving them" on a daily basis (SMP #1).

The students at my school are developing mathematicians who persevere!

Our students work individually and collaboratively on a daily basis to solve a variety of problems. In my class, most of these problems are math problems. It is wonderful to see students from different backgrounds, cultures, and skill sets,"...construct viable arguments, reason abstractly/quantitatively, use tools strategically," and more. I am proud to see how our students apply their mathematical skills to solve real world problems.

My Project

Pre-Algebra and Algebra can seem like pretty daunting subjects to learn. However, they don't have to be. Algebra tiles are great hands-on manipulatives that can help students understand equations, variables. integers, etc. In elementary students use base ten blocks to help them understand diverse topics. In middle school, students can use Algebra Tiles.

So the verdict is in: Algebra tiles CAN help make Algebra more understandable.

Having a classroom set of Algebra tiles would be an amazing hands-on resource for students to have. A classroom set would enable each student to have their own tiles to work with, which is a win-win!
