Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Throughout the first couple weeks of school, I've had the pleasure of getting to know my new group of students. Already, I see they have the same thirst for knowledge that I've seen in so many of my past students. They love challenging themselves in math and reading, writing personal narratives and funny stories, learning about our world and it's past, and exploring through science. My students strive for excellence daily, and I want to provide any opportunity to help them reach their dreams.
Many of my students love coming to school not only because they enjoy learning, but because school is their safe space.
Our school population is very mobile and it is not uncommon for us to get new students or lose students multiple times throughout the school year. At our school, 80% of our school population also qualifies for free or reduced lunch and many of my students also face the challenge of learning English. In my class I have 13 English Language Learners. My students all have needs unique to them as a learner. However, one thing my students all have in common is that they all come to school eager to learn!
My Project
If I've learned anything working in 2nd grade, it is that 2nd graders love to share. The group of students I have this year is particularly eager to share with each other. Just this week, my students were inventors, using what we had learned about magnets to create products that would solve common classroom issues. They dreamed up scorpion-shaped products that would scuttle around the room picking up fallen paperclips with a magnetic tail. Another group designed a contraption that would keep artwork from falling off the walls. When they were done, they were all so excited to share what they had created!
With so many of my students being English Language Learners it is essential they be able to practice their expressive English.
This document camera would allow my students to showcase their work while developing presentation and sharing skills essential to any future job they might hold. I want my students to be able to share and collaborate with one another. With the WiFi capability of this document camera, I will be able to move to where my students are working. This means that I can have students share work while they are at stations, working independently, or working on a project - all without them having to pick up everything and move it to the front of the room!
Additionally, I have flexible seating in my classroom, and have noticed so many of my students focus well when sitting on yoga balls, stools, and foot-bouncing bands. I'm looking to add more seats that students could use while sitting on the carpet. The wobble discs would provide an option for students who need to wiggle on the carpet that wouldn't distract from their classmates' learning.
