Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Many of my students are not exposed to much outside of their neighborhood. Many don't have transportation to the library, and few have computers or books at home. Therefore, my class is their main exposure to books and technology.

Most of my students come from the public housing adjacent to our school.

Over 90% are on free lunch . Many do not have books at home or get read a bedtime story, therefore, the only books they get to interact with are the ones at school. Because they don't get read to at home finding the motivation to read is a struggle. One thing they do love.... is to work on the tablets!

My Project

Our class is lucky to have many online resources and our school has wi-fi, however, our class only has 3 computers and 2 tablets(thanks to donorschoose). It is always a struggle to be able to get all the students to the computers to practice their reading and math skills. These tablets will be incorporated into our reading groups and allow students to be able to read books and take quizzes on the books at their desks during our reading centers.

This project will make a my students better readers and me a better teacher.

It will help my students be better readers because they will be able to daily read books and check their comprehension on the tablets. It will help me be a better teacher by allowing me to gather more data to see where my students need my help the most. Our main focus is making our students the best they can be and these tablets will help facilitate that.
