This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

A quote can make or break a story. The right interview and the right line can bring tremendous richness to any article. I want to teach my students how to conduct those essential interviews that will help them improve their writing.

My students are promising students of low socioeconomic status who live in Southeast Los Angeles.

They attend a small school focused on international studies. Our students learn about different regions of the world although many have never left their city. Our goal is to create active global citizens who take initiative. Our journalism program is a new one. This is our third year. Through journalism we work on bringing the world to the rest of our school. My students are inquisitive, creative, and yearning to tell their story; a story that often gets neglected. Through journalism students have a voice and are empowered to let the world know who they are. They are empowered to bring awareness and change.

My Project

I am requesting voice recorders to teach my students how to properly conduct interviews and transcribe them. This is an essential tool for students who are active journalists. Teaching my students how to interview and transcribe will help them use stronger sources in all of their stories. Stronger stories will equal more readership and in essence more awareness and influence. Having a class set of voice recorders will allow all students to work on the interview process at the same time and for every newspaper cycle. I am also requesting two digital camera bags and tripod to help them take better care of their digital camera and be able to take the photos to accompany their interviews.

Teaching students how to conduct interviews will provide them with a powerful tool to improve not only their high school newspaper but also the exposure they have to different sources and perspectives.

Having this tool will help students have a greater sense of pride in their own work.
