Help me give my students the opportunity to enjoy Camp Kern and to experience camp, the outdoors, and teambuilding in a way that most will never get a chance to do otherwise.
Have you ever wanted to be a part of something but just didn’t know how to do it? That’s what many of my students face every day. My students come from an area that is very low socioeconomically and this prevents most of them from experiencing things that many of us take for granted. Being a positive part of a community or group is something that many struggle with as well because they just don’t have the opportunities to develop the skills necessary to be successful with their peers. We try to do things at school to encourage positivity and respect for others, but that often seems like work to them.
Being able to go to camp is something that a lot of my students have never thought of, let alone wanted to do.
. We want our students to feel like they are part of something big, something special—our class! We want to provide our students with experiences that they would not be able to get outside of school. We love our students and we want them to love themselves and their “community” as well.
My Project
Camp Kern is a place where our students will be able to experience science, early Ohio history, group interaction and cooperation while being outdoors; this camp provides many different meaningful outdoor learning experiences with its 480 acres of forest, ravines, pastures, and historic landmarks.
Because our students are economically disadvantaged, many will never again have this kind of opportunity to build relationships and explore the outdoors while learning about themselves and how to get along with others.
Our students come to us from many different backgrounds and schools and they need time to work together as a team so that they can build relationships that will continue throughout school. Camp also provides our students with the chance to get to know themselves and provides them with ways to overcome some of their adversity.
