Campfire Reading Adventures with a Book & a Flashlight!
My students need flashlights and rechargeable batteries to use during silent reading. The flashlights will instill our classroom with a sense of fun, adventure, and wonder that will make independent reading time memorable.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work with students who are English language learners and have learning disabilities. They also come from families that struggle with paying bills and affording school supplies and books. Despite these challenges, my students bring many strengths to the classroom, including a passion for learning and a willingness to take risks as they acquire the building blocks of reading.
My students love math, science, computers, and art, and they love learning how things work.
They are curious about the world and are eager to improve their literacy skills.
My Project
These colorful flashlights and rechargeable batteries will give my students a new way to enjoy independent reading. The sense of joy, mystery, and wonderment of reading under the stars around a campfire will be brought into our classroom daily during silent reading time.
Students who read daily for fun and pleasure both under the covers or in the classroom with a flashlight will become lifelong learners and readers who can turn to books for adventure, connection with characters from long ago and the future, and to learn about the natural world, other cultures, and themselves.
Students will be able to choose a flashlight and a book and read for pleasure while the lights in the classroom are turned off. This activity will instill a love for reading in my reluctant readers, who rarely read outside of the classroom. The goal of this project is to make reading a time that is both pleasureable and relaxing. Students will be allowed to sit at their desks or in a comfortable, soft bean bag while reading their book "under the covers" with rapt attention and enjoyment.
