Help me give my students the most engaging end of the year review to prepare them for 4th grade while implementing personalized learning activities for our Camp Classroom room transformation!
We have the happiest third graders! We are a Capturing Kids’ Hearts School at a brand new school, and that’s created for children who take ownership of their progress, have bonded together as a community, and love learning in their bright and innovative classroom. We spend much of our time working and collaborating in groups to help best meet their needs. They love working in groups because they receive a lot of close instruction from me, enjoy the freedom of making choices in stations, and it keeps them moving all day reducing behavior problems. Plus, it keeps them engaged rather than being in whole group instruction where they become lost! Happiness does a lot for a child’s outlook on school!
Because our state requires automatic retention for third graders who don’t perform well on our standardized test (FSA), our students experience anxiety, feeling overwhelmed, and dread as the FSA Test approaches, but the effect of this is after the test, they begin checking out even though we have 2 months left of school.
Our job is to engage them in highly motivating activities where they can become 4th grade ready! This is the basis of this this project!
My Project
The last two months of the school year, after our standardized test, when our children begin to lose motivation after tiring assessment, we spend time reviewing and preparing for 4th grade with student driven learning steeped in personalized learning.
To capture our children’s interest, we’ll transform our classrooms into our own Camp Classroom filled with tents, camping props, outfits, literature, and create rotations covering all the disciplines all centered around camping.
Many of our students have wonderful memories camping with their family, so coming to Camp Classroom for a week will be great fun for them! They won’t even realize they are learning! This will be a week long event where children explore areas of interest such as creating camp activities for classmates to enjoy with a schedule (time), create a solar oven to make s’mores (science), study the history of camping/national parks (social studies), flash light reading of spooky stories students write around a camp fire (language arts), studying animal tracks and scat (science), go fishing math games, and researching an animal of choice to become an expert and share with others.
