Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you still have your high school yearbook? Our first full class of graduating seniors craves the chance to hold their memories in a tangible yearbook. This year I am teaching a graphic design class that teaches kids how to design our first yearbook. We just need two cameras to take pictures!
Our 350 students come from all over the world and are learning English.
Collectively, they speak 29 different languages. Nearly all of them immigrated within the last 4 years. About 25% of them hold refugee immigration status, having escaped conflicts in Liberia, Burma, Nepal and the former Soviet bloc. More than 90% of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch.
My Project
With such an amazing diversity at our school, we have the chance to create a truly original yearbook. An image is truly worth a thousand words, especially when that image captures the cultural heritage that our students bring to the school.
Skills my students will acquire from learning how to take great pictures include composition, framing, touching up pictures in Photoshop, and using pictures in Illustrator and InDesign layouts.
Our school opened its doors less than four years ago.
This year's seniors are our first full graduating class. Please help them make our school's first yearbook a special place to keep their memories!
