Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach primarily 6-8th grade students in a 6-12th grade Title I school. My students are largely from immigrant backgrounds, particularly of Latin descent. Many are English Language Learners, or students with different needs. As a group, they enjoy engaging in complex conversations around highly charged topics such as race, gender, ability, and much more!
My students are passionate individuals who are excited about learning.
They are always willing to step up to break down stereotypes and address discrimination and bullying. Like any family, they are not perfect and there are conflicts within the group, but also like any family, they stick together to protect each other. As they make gains as a group, they try to transfer their learning and growth to address wider issues in our communities - locally and globally.
Most of my students are looking forward to attending high school and continuing to make an impact. Some hope to stay at our school for high school, others hope to go on to specialized high schools. All of them are hoping to continue making waves in our communities!
My Project
Each year, my colleagues and I are lucky to be involved in a school-wide initiative called Intensives in December. During Intensives, all regularly scheduled classes are suspended and students participate in a week-long project-based learning segment. Teachers plan the project to support students in grades 6-12 in a collaborative learning inquiry. This year, we are focusing our Intensive project on youth activism and photography.
With these cameras, students will be able to document their vision for activism and change in our communities.
Our school collects students cell phones, so using their phone cameras is not an option for us. To that end, we really need help to get the equipment they will need to successfully complete their projects. Projects will include photo montages, mini documentaries, poster creation and more.
Many of our students are specifically hoping to begin cleaning up the Bronx and the area around our school and their homes. This focus on Environmental Activism is important to our students, because, in their words, "we're sick of seeing all the trash and having to step around it when we're coming to school!"
