My Project
Rates of anxiety in young children have risen dramatically in the last several years. These calming tools will be used to create a toolkit in each classroom in the elementary school building. Calming tool kits for classrooms are great for helping students manage stress, anxiety, and sensory overload. This will allow students to take a break due to anxiety or stress, while remaining in the classroom and still hearing instruction.
These toolkits will help promote emotional regulation and create a peaceful learning environment in each classroom.
Each item was specifically chosen with anxiety and sensory issues in mind, including noise reducing headphones, weighted lap blankets, brain focusing Rubix cubes, and finger fidgets. The bins will hold all of the items for each classroom in a dedicated place so that students can access the supports independently, thereby increasing their self-advocacy skills.
Our school has students preschool through 6th grade in an urban district where 74% of students qualify for free or reduced lunches. These students face the hardships associated with low income communities. They are learning coping tools through social-emotional lessons, but we would like them to learn to use strategies within the classroom.
