My Project

My school is an amazing PreK to 3rd grade museum magnet school. I happen to be one of the exceptional education teachers for students with disabilities. I have always had a calming area in my classroom for students to take breaks and re-set before going back to their general education classrooms.

This past year, so many students have benefited from taking planned and as-needed breaks, that we are setting up another calm area and enhancing others.

This will allow us to have a space on each floor of our school for students to easily access as needed.

The items we are asking for are what the students love. They love to spin in an office chair, they love multi-sensory things they can run their hands and feet on. Some students need to feel the comfort of safety away from others and our escapers like the tent and weighted blankets.

Another part of the project is to give students a toolkit they can use in their classroom so they aren't taking as many spur-of-the-moment breaks and can wait for a planned break that isn't during instruction time. We will use the pencil pouches to make individual students toolkits filled with fidgets and resources they need to be successful in class.

For this project, I am teaming up with the school counselor and others on our SEL team so any student in our school can access these places, spaces, and tools. This has the potential to support up to 400 students each year!
