This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Tucked away in the west central region of Baltimore City, our school is home to approximately three hundred students in pre-k through eighth grade. Our school has a ninety-two percent FARM rate and a twenty-four percent special education rate, as our school is also home to several city-wide specialized programs. Living in an urban setting, our students are fortunate to have a school with ample outdoor green space and a comfortable school building. We strive to make every area in the school child-friendly to maximize learning and comfort.
Our students enjoy coming to school and thrive on integrating technology and hands-on learning opportunities into our curriculum.
The amazing staff employs a wealth of knowledge and creativity to meet individual student needs across grade levels. Knowing that Baltimore City school students experience ACE (Adverse Childhood Experiences) at a much higher rate than our state and national averages, we feel it is imperative for school to be a sanctuary for these children.
Our school staff pride ourselves on creating a positive climate in all classes. However, we recognize that students may have times when they require additional tools to calm and focus.
This project reflects the personalized list created by every teacher in the school building with the goal of creating a safe and calming space within each classroom.
The cozy chairs and rugs will create designated spaces in each room or area where students can choose to spend up to 10 minutes time to calm down, focus or self-regulate. There will be a range of tools-stress balls, putty, coloring pages, or zen gardens to allow students to self-calm. Reducing noise using ear covers, changing harsh fluorescent light using filters and adding oil diffusers will also help minimize environmental stimuli to create a sense of peace within the classroom. Supplies like a printer and hole puncher allow us to create personalized student menus for strategies they can use to self-regulate.
All of this is intended to continue to build upon our positive climate by normalizing self-care and self-regulation. This is part of school-wide effort to also implement curriculum to teach skills that can be used in these spaces. We want to increase engaged time, continue to support our students' emotional development, and reinforce our students' ability to make positive choices when under stress or when having strong feelings.
