My students attend one of three special education classrooms for primary and intermediate students. These are “blended classrooms,” meaning that our special education students have several opportunities daily to work alongside their general education classmates. The general and special education teachers partner to implement lessons and activities appropriate for both groups when they are blended together.
We are broadening our students’ empathy, respect, responsibility, and acceptance of others within a diverse population while providing a challenging and appropriate education.
This cooperative and collaborative effort involves students, parents, and staff within the school community.
Blending allows for additional adult assistance for all students involved. Blending allows for flexible, student-centered learning. My students have a wide range of academic abilities and love being an active part of our school community.
My Project
My students with disabilities are hard workers and active learners. This project will help us to create a sensory space in our classroom to help our students self-regulate their senses. After our students finish their work schedule, they will be able to relax and calm their minds and bodies.
The Harkla Hug creates the perfect experience for kids downtime where they can relax and play in the sensory pea pod.
The rocking chair will be a great place to read a book and all of the massagers will give our students tools to better help them participate in lessons and group activities. Also, hand squeezes are always needed and the hand massage device will allow our students to be more independent with their sensory needs.
