Help me give my students a safe space with tools to help them self-regulate in a calm environment when they are frustrated, overstimulated, or upset in the Social Work office.

My Project

Students respond to things like stress, anxiety, sadness, frustration, or trauma, in a wide variety of ways. Some students may have difficulty concentrating, sitting still, and be hyperactive; while others may become agitated, tearful, or even shut down. When feeling these intense emotions, it can be tremendously difficult to focus on the schoolwork expected of them. Calming corners can provide students with the safe space needed to regulate their emotions, so that they can successfully transition back into the classroom.

My project is to create a safe, positive, and calming corner in my office that any student can utilize when experiencing an overwhelming emotion.

I would like to create a space where there is flexible seating, coloring books, and fidget toys that students can utilize to relax and calm down. Flexible seating options allow students to make choices about what works best for them. My goal is to help support students’ mental health, and help students calm themselves, so that they can be sent back to class ready for success.
