This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
This project will give my students a more welcoming calming corner. Currently, the corner is just a chair with a small rug and bookshelf.
Students use the calming corner during class when they feel stressed or overwhelmed.
They fill out a reflection paper to help them work through their emotions. I also have fidgets, inspirational quotes, and basic needs supplies for students to use to regulate their needs. While the current space is functional, not many students use it. I have asked students why and they say it isn't very welcoming- its really just a chair in the corner. These are supplies they suggested to me in order to make the space more welcoming.
The curtain will give students privacy while allowing me to see them to ensure they are safe. The paint will brighten up the room's peeling discolored paint making a more inviting space. The grass and furniture are chosen to last through the wear and tear of more students using this space!
