I am so honored to work with so many amazing students. I work in a Title I school district with students who have IEPs for special education needs. Every day I am inspired by these students who live in an area where trauma and violence are common and yet they continue to persist and come to school to get their education. For many of these student our school is their safe place. So I feel it is my responsibility to made sure that we are providing them with every possible support and opportunity available with little to no funding.
It is a gift when my students share their lives with me.
And those lives include many traumas and hardships as well as joys and successes. As a School Social Worker I am honored to provide a place to share stories and help find ways to dissipate the traumas and celebrate the joys. I am always looking for creative, evidenced based ways to support these students.
Students who live in communities with trauma have an increased need for calm spaces to help their brains stay regulated and ready to learn. The student in our high school have unusually high ACEs (Adverse Childhood Experiences) scores and traumatic stress. Finding calming spaces are critical for the students to stay regulated and ready to learn.
Being able to find calm spaces in classrooms helps ensure students don't miss any learning.
Because the high school classes are 90 minutes in length, students often need a mindfulness/brain breaks during the class period and having the supplies like singing bowls in each classroom makes these calming techniques easy to access.
To further support calming in the classroom, teachers are also creating spaces with colored lights and beanbags so that students can take self directed breaks when necessary.
