This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I work with an amazing group of kindergarten-3rd grade students all of whom have special needs. All these students come from extremely hard-working families, living in a neighborhood that is made up primarily of low income/immigrant families. My students have shown to be incredibly resilient and caring, in spite of several of them coming from rough backgrounds. Some of my students experience crime outside of school. I am always motivated by how they come to school ready to participate, no matter what happened the day before.

I have been working on creating a classroom that meets my students' needs, specifically creating a trauma informed classroom.

Research shows that classroom with calming, neutral colors promotes de-escalation for students brains who are constantly in flight or fight mode.

This will be a classroom with neutral colors, with the white wood peel and stick wall paper being the base of our color scheme. The peel and stick is required by our district as to not ruin the paint or walls. I will be putting up SEL visuals throughout the room, and the neutral color of the wood will promote a calm mind and body (less stimulation for my students).
