My Project

The Calming Carpet can transform the classroom environment by shifting the focus from “How do we stop this behavior?” to “What does this student need in order to regulate and learn?”

With a soft rug, purposeful sensory materials, visual supports, and explicit instruction, the space can become a practical tool for helping exceptional students recognize their needs and develop lifelong self-regulation skills.

The ultimate goal is to create a comfortable, predictable space with a rug as its physical foundation, the classroom can provide students with an accessible opportunity to pause, regulate, communicate, and successfully navigate opportunities to practice coping skills that will help reduce anxiety.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
