Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

As a special education teacher I have seen that all students need a calming corner that they feel safe and comfortable to be in. This new reimagined space includes a tent, pillows, rug, weighted dog to hold, and a timer. I also have fairy lights to decorate the tent to add a little soft lighting for the students. Students can come in, crawl into the tent and start a timer to help regulate their emotions, or just take a break. I have found in the past that having a safe and comfortable space for them to come when they need a break is very helpful.

Desks are not comfortable, and the student who is already struggling will not want to be in that space to take a break that they are uncomfortable in.

The tent allows them a space to go and be by themselves to reset to take on the world again. The tent is just large enough for the teacher to join them from the door if necessary to work through emotions that are preventing them from working when the timer goes off.

Thank you for helping my new classroom come together. This project will allow my littlest students (Kindergartners) to my bigger students meet their goals of advocating for their needs to take a break in a safe and comfortable space. Thank you!
