The benefits that yoga can offer my students is amazing. I have been reading more and more research that supports the benefits physically, emotionally, and academically. My goal is to use yoga to target the increasing needs I am seeing from my students in an effort to equip them with the skills needed to cope effectively with their big feelings. We have three elementary and three middle schools in our county, as well as one high school with only three counselors to support all of these students. A large percentage of our families are low-income and they depend on the school system for more than an education. We have to get creative with our strategies to help benefit our student population at a tier one level.
Consistent yoga and mindfulness activities can help benefit our students and teachers in multiple ways by providing them a calm body and mind.
I am very excited about offering this opportunity to the schools in our county. As I often find, funding is a barrier in education for things like this. Therefore, I am pursuing alternative options such as DonorsChoose. I can relate to the proverb saying "It takes a village to raise a child" as we are seeing greater and greater student needs daily.
