Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

As a school psychiatric social worker, my students come to me for various mental health struggles, stressors, trauma and are in high need of a safe space to calm down, self regulate when triggered and be able to return to class ready to learn. My hope and goal with this project is to provide my students with a space where they can apply the healthy coping skills they are learning. I want for my students to have various tools to engage in deep breathing, mindfulness, grounding and relaxation before returning to class. As a high need school with social emotional concerns, my students can really benefit from this project. We ultimately want them to be academically successful while their mental health is thriving and healthy as well.

The mandala coloring books will be used for grounding.

The lava lamp for grounding and mindfulness. The LEGO will be used as a tool to distract self in a healthy way and practice focus and concentration. Sensory tools will also be provided to the inattentive student. The posters will remind students of healthy habits they have and can continue to build. The playdough will also be used as a healthy outlet when a student is in distress. The goal to provide the students with healthy tools as well as a nice, aesthetically pleasing environment for the students. The calming area will provide the students with a space to relax and return to baseline in efforts to return back to class and continue to learn.
